Hilary’s Hunt for Houndstooth

I love the pattern houndstooth. And if you don’t know what that is, you surely will soon if you check out this post.

I pretty much buy anything I come across that is houndstooth, if I can.

I’m going to probably make this a recurring feature here, and share with you the cool houndstooth things I come across.

So here is your first installment.

First up a Slinky Brand Houndstooth Open Front Vest I found on HSN.com. Super Cute!

A very nice Cashmere Scarf at Harvey Nichols:

I’m not a man, so I don’t  wear pocket squares, but I think this would look great with a suit.  Found at mrporter.com.

Until next time!

This Day in Music- September 18

Here are just a few of the things that happened in the world of music on September 18 throughout the years.

1970- This is the day that Jimi Hendrix passed away.

1983- Kiss appeared on MTV without their make-up for an interview. Yikes! Eventually they got smart and put it back on.

1984- David Bowie won Video of the Year for China Girl at the first MTV Video Awards.

1996- Julian Lennon successfully bid on the recording notes to the song Hey Jude at Sotheby’s in London.

2006- Willie Nelson’s your bus pulled over in Louisiana. 4 members of his band are charged with drug possession. Surprise, surprise.

More Duct Tape Fun- Life Hacks and Survival

We all know duct tape is handy stuff and there are so many uses. It is definitely a great idea to keep some on hand, wherever you go. You never know when you might get stuck in a precarious situation. If you have a bug-out bag, or an emergency pack, make sure to throw some in there as well.

duct tape

Now, I have a book, Duct Tape 911, which gives directions on how to use the sticky stuff for medical emergencies.

Here are a few other ways you can use duct tape when you are in a sort of bind. I didn’t necessarily come up with all these ideas, but scouted them out online.

  • Tent Repair– What if you pull out your tent and discover there is a hole in it? Well just patch it up! Or maybe the zipper or pole is broken. Duct tape to the rescue.
  • First Aid– Check out that book I mentioned above for additional tips, but you can always use duct tape to make a sling, bandage strips, or wrap a sprained ankle.
  • Glasses Repair– What could be worse than breaking your glasses while stuck in the wilderness? Duct tape would definitely come in handy there.
  • Protection– Duct tape your knife to a pole and make yourself a spear!

Those are just a handful of ideas. There are tons more of course!

And check out this link for a video of some other Duct Tape Life Hacks.

Collect Rocks Day

Hey Hey! It’s Collect Rocks Day!

I have no  idea when this originated and I can’t find much detail about it, but it seems like as good a day as any to go and collect some rocks!

Here are some river rocks I collected recently. I am planning on getting a rock tumbler and making jewelry with them soon!

Book Review- Captive by Ashley Smith #flyby #followyourpurpose

I just posted last week about 90 Minutes in Heaven. Now I have an opportunity to share another faith-based book-turned-movie with you. This time, it is Captive by Ashley Smith (originally published as Unlikely Angel).

captive

Overview

This is directly from the press release:

CAPTIVE: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero, based on a miraculous true story that drew the attention of the entire nation, is a thrilling drama about the spiritual collision of two broken lives.  When Brian Nichols – on the run as the subject of a city wide manhunt and desperate to make contact with his newborn son – takes recovering meth addict Ashley Smith hostage in her own apartment, she turns for guidance to Rick Warren’s best-selling inspirational book, The Purpose Driven Life.  While reading aloud, Ashley and her would-be killer each face crossroads where despair and death intersect hope.

The film stars Kate Mara and David Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King, Jr. in the recent film, Selma. It is being released September 18th.

Here is the official movie trailer.

From the Back of the Book:

In March 2005, Ashley Smith made headlines around the globe when she miraculously talked her way out of the hands of alleged courthouse killer Brian Nichols after he took her hostage for seven hours in her suburban Atlanta apartment. In this moving, inspirational account- now a motion picture from Paramount- Ashley shares the details of her traumatic ordeal and expands on how her faith and the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life helped her survive and bring the killer’s murderous rampage to a peaceful end.

 My Thoughts

This was definitely an engaging read, as Smith brings us along on her difficult, but remarkable journey. I must say though, that I would point the focus more to the fact that she prayed for the man and shared the Word of God with him and a little less on The Purpose Driven Life specifically. Yes, that is the book she was reading at the time and no offense intended. I just think it’s important to remember the most important thing.

Book Review: 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper #Hopelives #flyby

90 Minutes in Heaven is not a new story. It was originally published in 2004, so it may be one that people are already familiar with, as it has sold 7 million copies. However, there is a movie version being released, so the book has been re-released.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

The movie is presented by Giving Films and will be in theaters everywhere September 11, 2015. The movie stars Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth, in addition to Michael W. Smith, Fred Thompson, Dwight Yoakam and Jason Kennedy. The film is rated PG-13 ( for intense accident and injury images).

ABOUT GIVING FILMS

This is the first film from Giving Films. They will be donating all of their profits to charities and ministries, such as Christian Alliance for orphans, Faith Bridge Foster Care, Hire Heroes USA, Hope International, LifeWater, Street Grace, and World Vision. When you see a Giving Films movie in theaters, you can visit their website and select which charities you would like to receive the profits from your ticket.

ABOUT THE BOOK

90min

This is directly from the press release:

Pastor Don Piper died January 18, 1989 when a semi-tractor truck crushed his car.  Declared dead by the first rescue workers to arrive on the scene, Don’s body lay under a tarp for the next 90 minutes.  Don’s soul, meanwhile, was experiencing love, joy, and life like he’d never known before.  Don was in Heaven.

When another pastor’s prayers helped bring Don back to life, he became a living miracle!  Yet this is one miracle Don wished never happened.  Heaven’s bliss was replaced by excruciating pain and emotional turmoil.  With the support and prayers of his beloved Eva, their three kids, and friends near and far, Don clings to his faith in God and fights to regain a semblance of his previous life.  The Piper family’s incredible true story of perseverance and overcoming the challenges of life – and death – will bring hope and encouragement to all who see it.
MY THOUGHTS
This book is the “movie edition”. Now since this is the first time I have read it, I am not 100% sure what is new or different about it. Of course, there is a “personal update from Don Piper” written in 2014, that was obviously not in the original.
In his book, Piper begins with the story of his accident and quickly we get to the part we are all waiting for- his time in heaven. He tells about being greeted by those he knew that had passed on and of the wonderful, heavenly music. Now, I can be skeptical of some “near-death experiences”, especially those that give a physical description of Jesus or things like that. Thankfully, Piper’s story isn’t like that, and nothing that I read seemed all out of line with Scripture. And Piper has definitely been using his experience to point others to God.
The book also deals with the extremely difficult recovery process Piper had to go through and eventually how he accepted his situation and began sharing his story with others. My main criticism is actually in regards to the photo section and not the main body of the book.
Personally, I wish there were more  photos of Don and his family before the accident and during the recovery process. The majority of the photos are of Don sharing his story more recently.
At the end of the book, there is a chapter, Stories of Encouragement that includes letters from people who have been touched by his story. He also includes his favorite Bible verses and quotations. I’m definitely looking forward to checking out the film as well.

September is National Honey Month

Did you know that September is National Honey Month? Well it is, so in honor of that, I thought I would share with you some of amazing uses for honey. Some of these you probably already know about, but hopefully you will find out something new about the sweet stuff.

According to the National Honey Board, a tablespoon of raw honey contains 64 calories, is fat-free, cholesterol-free, and sodium-free and is composed of about 80% carbohydrates, 18 percent water, and 2 percent vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.

  1. Allergies    This one I know about personally. Some may say it’s a myth, but I believe it works. Taking a spoonful of local honey can help relieve seasonal allergy symptoms.  It also works as a cough suppressant.

           2. Dandruff

Supposedly, you can apply honey, diluted with 10 percent warm water to areas affected by dandruff. Leave it on for three hours before rinsing though!

         3. Treat Wounds and Burns

Honey is a natural antibiotic and can be used to disinfect wounds from bacteria.

  4. Lip Balm

You can make your own with beeswax and honey or maybe pick up some Burt’s Bees.

   5.  Remove Parasites     I hope I don’t ever have to test this one out, but apparently you can mix some honey, water and vinegar to get rid of parasites

6. Hangover Help  Have some honey in the morning after partying too hard. The fructose will help speed up the metabolism of the alcohol.

Of course, there are many other uses, but there are a few to get you thinking.

Are there any other uses for honey that you would like to share?

Just Testing Something!
