MY THOUGHTS
OK, I have to say, I am a little sad. I have read every one of the Ivy Nash books and this is the last one! And look below. Part of my review of the first book is even quoted! I have grown to love these characters. I have some hope that I will see them again though, as Mefford tends to tie-in characters in his other series’. So I will have to start reading the Ozzie Novak books.

This book had a bit of a “dark side”, as you can tell from the book’s description, but for those who might be put off by that, the real focus of the story is Ivy and her crew working to find a missing teenager. The story took some twists and turns I didn’t expect, keeping me interest piqued the entire time. Now, I do feel there are some unanswered questions regarding Ivy’s personal life, such as the fate of her relationship with Saul. I don’t know if her character will play a big enough in the Ozzie Novak series for us to get the answer to that question, but one can hope!

I recommend every book in this series, if you couldn’t tell. Thank you, Mr. Mefford!

“Rife with deceit and deception and characters that leap off the page, this story is told with confidence through a sure hand, engaging both the mind and the heart. A compelling treat.” — Steve Berry, New York Times Bestselling Author

“An intense and heart wrenching story that keeps you engaged from beginning to end.” — Simon Wood, USA TODAY Bestselling Author of DECEPTIVE PRACTICES.

“I love the way that Mefford writes, seamlessly jumping between characters and time frames with no confusion, and he is extremely descriptive of the setting . You almost feel like you are watching a movie instead of reading a book!” — Hilary Mahoney, Elusive Red Tiger

The Scoop
By now you’re probably aware that the Alex Troutt thrillers, Ivy Nash thrillers, and the soon-to-be-released Ozzie Novak thrillers are all under the same Redemption Thriller Series umbrella. Why? Because, ultimately, they all connect — Alex, Ivy, Ozzie. How? That’s part of the mystery that I’m slowly unveiling throughout the Redemption Thriller Series.

Through each sub-series, characters from different books appear in the other novels. If it adds suspense, intrigue, or even a good laugh, I’ve included a cross-over character — it’s a lot more fun that way. Plus — and here’s the real kicker — I’ll write a final six novels that brings all of the major characters together — Alex, Ivy, Ozzie. It will be explosive and gut-wrenching…in a way that will leave you breathless. At least that’s my hope.

Starting with IN The End, I’ll be launching a new book every 2-4 weeks. IN The End will segue into the Ozzie Novak Thrillers. ON Edge (book 1), is due out on November 28. From there, it will be non-stop suspense until all six Ozzie books are released. And my editor tells me that Ozzie Novak is my best character yet.:) So, I hope you’re ready for some thrilling binge-reading.

How can you catch up if you’ve started the Redemption Thriller Series mid-stream?

MY THOUGHTS

Well, if you have been paying attention, you know that I  have read and reviewed all of the other books in this series so far. And guess what? I am already signed up to review the next one! The reason is because I have definitely been drawn in by the character of Ivy Nash and can’t wait to see what happens with her next, because of course there is ALWAYS something happening with her! I read this book quickly, because it was so enjoyable and I didn’t want to put it down. And FYI, you don’t have to have read any other books in the series to pick this one up, although it wouldn’t hurt.

Although the bad guy that had been tormenting Ivy in the last few books is supposed to be gone, I kept expecting him or someone associated with him to maybe make an appearance, but that didn’t happen. However, the twists and turns that are so characteristic of Mefford’s writing kept me drawn in. My only “problem” with the book was one sentence that referred to Stan “suffering a decapitated arm a couple months earlier.” So…. an arm can be amputated, but only a head can be decapitated. That only threw me off briefly though.

The next book is the final book in the series, which makes me a little sad, but I am looking forward to seeing how Mefford pulls everything together.

I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Q&A with author John W. Mefford:

Q: What do the Ivy Nash Thrillers have to do with the Redemption Thriller Series?

JWM: The Ivy Nash Thrillers comprise the second sub-series in the Redemption Thriller Series. The Alex Troutt Thrillers are the first sub-series. While I’ll eventually write a series that connects the major characters and plots from all the sub-series, you don’t have to read the AT books prior to the IN books. But I have to say, the AT thrillers are darn good.

Q: So you’re saying you don’t have to read the Alex Troutt Thrillers before the Ivy Nash Thrillers?

JWM: Nope. While a few of the characters might occasionally overlap between the series, they can be read as stand-alone. And then I’ll wrap everything up in a final set of six novels that connects all of the main characters and stories from each sub-series. If you haven’t read any of the Alex Troutt thrillers yet, you can try out the first three at a pretty nice discount. Just search for Alex Troutt Box Set.

Q: Can you give some insight into how Ivy Nash might connect to Alex Troutt down the line?

JWM: Sure…and then I’ll send over a hit squad. Seriously, I’ll be sprinkling in a few clues along the way for those who pay close attention to the details, but it will all come together in that final six novels of the Redemption Thriller Series. And it will be explosive and gut-wrenching at the same time.

Q: How many different sub-series are you planning to have in the Redemption Thriller Series?

JWM: Right now, I see four sub-series in the Redemption Thriller Series, with six novels in each. It’s the most challenging and fulfilling creative endeavor I’ve undertaken. I hope you enjoy the journey.

MY THOUGHTS

Well, since a quote from one of my previous reviews in the series is featured above, no pressure to say something amazing, right?

Once again, I love this next book in the Ivy Nash series by John Mefford. As always, the author kept me guessing. I did not even guess that a certain person was one of the “bad guys” until moments before it happened and I thought, “No way!” I am amazed at all the crazy things that Ivy has gone through. In the midst of her helping out kids, she ALWAYS finds herself in some kind of trouble. You would think she might try to live more cautiously, considering how many times she has been kidnapped, but that is just not her nature. Her past always comes back to haunt her, but she does not let that break her will and her character.

I also loved that in the this book, there is more character development for Christina and even for Stan. I’m taking a guess that there will be more action involving Christina in the next book. And oh yes, there is a next book and I will be reading it.

As always, it is not completely necessary to have read the other books in the series, but I would highly recommend it! Great job once again, Mr. Mefford!

What I Think:

So far I have read all the books in this series because they are great and I love the characters! Mefford doesn’t disappoint with In Doubt. For real, when do we get the Ivy Nash movie or TV show. As I have said before, these books are made for the screen, as the author’s writing style puts you right in the story. I’m so excited to read the next book in the series as well! And I had no clue what the outcome would be. Mefford left me guessing!

MY THOUGHTS

If you will remember, I read and reviewed the previous book in this series, In Defiance, and I am most definitely planning on reading the next one as well. As I have stated, I love the writing style of this author and I love the character of Ivy Nash. The descriptions of the deaths in the books are detailed without being completely gruesome. Of course, the manner in which they die IS gruesome, but the author is able to describe it in a way that didn’t make me want to throw the book down. And the suspense is real, you really have no idea what’s coming when you find out who the bad guy is. Some books give away too much too early, but Mefford does not. And again, I am still waiting for these stories to turn into a movie or TV show, because the writing definitely lends itself to that! Looking forward to the next chapter in the Ivy Nash story!

Book Review: When We Last Spoke By Marci Henna #WhenWeLastSpoke #FlyBy

I recently had the chance to read a great book which I loved, called When We Last Spoke by Marci Henna.

Let me tell you about it! How about the description from the back cover first?

whenwe

Humor, heartbreak and triumph are served with whipped cream and lots of local nuts in this heartwarming tale of family, friendship, and forgiveness in Fireside, Texas.

Meet Juliet Cranbourne, local radio personality and owner of a whimsical kitchen gadget store, and her sister Evangeline, a fruit tree geneticist who works for Oregon State University.

When a rift due to their orphaned past affects their sisterhood, Juliet convinces Evangeline to come home for Christmas and choose headstones to honor grandparents Walt ( a tenderhearted, good looking rancher) and Ruby ( a blue-ribbon fiddler, fabulous cook, and expert in the art of making family feel loved. As they cruise through Fireside in Ruby’s Thunderbird, Juliet hopes that healing memories will somehow smooth rough roads ahead.

Does the tremendous love that marked Walt and Ruby’s lives still have the power to renew their sisterhood and help them find their place in the world?

And here are some of the things other people are saying about this book:

“How can you not love a book, and the characters it contains, after y0u read this line: ‘Ruby had recently re-upholstered it ( an office chair) with deerskin off the buck she had shot through through the kitchen window last fall.’ In Fireside, Texas where people put mayo on their childrens’ heads to kill the lice, and mean old women still wear pillbox hats, people seem to do what my people do, but do seem a lot more fun at it.”

My Thoughts

This was a really great book, although I am not southern enough to fully understand some of the colloquialisms mentioned throughout the book. They weren’t too difficult to figure out though. This isn’t a fast-paced, action filled book. It is the story of a family, and as we all know, sometimes families aren’t the makings of an action film (Speaking of film, this story is currently in development for either TV or film- I saw both mentioned, so I’m not sure which).

The majority of this story is set in the past, when Juliet and Evangeline are children. I do however wish there was more information on what happened in the years between childhood and the sisters’ eventual estrangement. Perhaps that will come up in another book in the series. I sure hope so.  Also, I want to own a store like Juliet’s! I definitely look forward to more books by this author!

Also, the author is giving away a free Kindle version of the book on Amazon from February 20-24. So check that out at the link below!

My copy of the book also came with a DVD featuring a video trailer. You can also check that out on YouTube here.

A volatile hostage situation at a foster home reaches a bitter end: shots are fired, some die, some live to tell a sordid tale. In the midst of the anguish and confusion is one child who will bear the scars of this unbelievable turmoil.

As a special investigator for Child Protective Services, Ivy Nash lives by one rule: she’ll do anything to fight for the well-being of children. Anything. Something that was never done for her. As a “system” kid, she spent time in seventeen foster homes. Seventeen.

Very quickly, the facts of the case are blurred…accusations of sibling abuse, connections to drugs. Nothing lines up, and authorities want it all to go away. Their target? A ten-year-old boy. Unrelenting in her pursuit to find the truth, Ivy and her new friend Cristina uncover alarming new information to pinpoint who is at the root of the crime.

But evil knows no boundaries. Shock waves of her most horrific childhood memories erupt into the present, and Ivy knows that she’s in the fight for her life.

About the Author
A veteran of the corporate wars, former journalist, and true studier of human and social behavior, best-selling author John W. Mefford has been writing novels since he first entered the work force twenty-five years ago, although he never put words on paper until late 2009.

John writes novels full of intrigue, suspense, and thrills, but they also evoke an emotional connection with the characters.

When he’s not writing, he chases three kids around, slaves away in the yard, reads, takes in as many sports as time allows, watches all sorts of movies, and continues to make mental notes of people and societies across the land.

John lives in Frisco, Texas with his beautiful wife, three opinionated kids, and a feisty fat cat who rules the world.

MY THOUGHTS:

I have read one book by this author previously and enjoyed it. It was part of the Alex Troutt Series. I loved the opportunity to be able to follow this section of the series from the beginning, and I also loved having the main character be a female.

I love the way that Mefford writes, seamlessly jumping between characters and time frames with no confusion, and he is extremely descriptive of the setting . You almost feel like you are watching a movie instead of reading a book!

For those that might be sensitive, be aware that there is some violence and language in this book. It fits the story and isn’t overdone, but as I realize some people do have issues with this, I wanted to let you know.

According to the author, he will eventually wrap the story lines of the series’ together in some way, but you definitely do not have to have read any of the Troutt books to understand this book. As far as I can tell, there is no overlap…yet.

Grabbing your attention from the first page, Mefford takes you on a wild ride of suspense through the entire story. You will not want to put it down and you will be anxiously awaiting the next book.

Book Review: On The Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman

A great fully-formed story in a small package!

Hey Hey Hey! Another book review for you today! On The Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman!

ropes

First up, as always, the description:

Blow after blow, she hides her face and fights for her life.

Doctor Ruth Burnette has everything she has ever dreamed possible: the perfect job, a twin sister who is her best friend, and a fiance who is retiring from professional boxing as the middleweight champion of the world.

Then came that fateful night when she witnessed a mafia execution. When her sister is murdered she knows she’ll battle to the last round and never, ever throw in the towel. Now she’s down for the count, in witness protection, anxious, alone except for the faithful company of her German Shepherd at her side.

As the time draws near to when she has to leave her safe little corner she stays on her toes. She has to testify against one of the darkest criminals in New York, she shores up the courage to face the accused from the witness stand. Unexpectedly, he’s not the one who worries her. She wonders what coming face-to-face with his son, Victor Kovalev… her former fiance… will bring. Will Ruth have a fighting chance against the Kovalev family, or will Victor keep her pinned ON THE ROPES?

My Thoughts:

This is a quick read, as it is technically a novella. However, even though it is short, it is full of intensity, suspense, and, of course, love. As the time comes closer for Ruth to testify, it becomes a constant worry if she will make it there alive, as the Russian Mob has not given up on finding her and silencing her for good. Also in the midst of the crime and intrigue, there is a Christian backdrop of redemption. The story does contain some seedy elements, if you couldn’t guess, so I would say that this book is for adults specifically.

The story does hop around between the present and the past, but it certainly isn’t difficult to follow along, as the transitions are extremely smooth. The love story is sweet, if you can ignore the murder and other crimes. Not that you want to ignore that. Just saying that it is a cute story of how the two meet and fall in love. Especially when her pick-up line is inviting him to church. I also found it interesting when Ruth is in the witness protection program, she has to be careful to not be tagged on social media or anything like that. With the technology people have today, with facial recognition programs and the like, it is not as easy to hide out as you might think.

Despite the length, I found that the story didn’t seem rushed at all and was still an entire, well-developed story. I will have to look for more of Ms. Bridgeman’s books in the near future!

I was provided a complimentary copy this book through BookCrash, in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Courageous by Dina Sleiman

Well, once again, just trying to get caught up on some book reviews. I had a period of time where I agreed to review too many books at the same time, but even though it is late, I am going to keep my commitment and get the reviews out there.

So, next up is Courageous by Dina Sleiman. It is the third book in a series called Valiant Hearts. I have not read any of the other books in the series, but had no trouble following along.

courageous

The book’s description:

Inspired by the vision of the Young Lady Sapphira, Rosalind of Ipsworth joins a group of men, women, and children as a defender of the cross, seeking to free captives from prisons near Tripoli. She gladly gives herself to the cause, as she’s haunted by a tragic mistake and no longer deserves such joys of marriage and family might bring.

Sir Randel Penigree was reared to serve in the church, but dreams of protecting the innocent as a knight. Joining a crusade to escape humiliation at home, he finds himself drawn to Rosalind as they partner to train and protect a group of young adolescents. When they face political machinations, danger, and an unknown enemy bent on their destruction, they are forced to reconsider their priorities and the very nature of the God they serve.

My Thoughts:

I believe this book is geared more towards a young adult audience, that doesn’t bother me any. Even though I’m way past that age range, I can still enjoy it. From what I understand, the characters in this book were mentioned as secondary characters in the previous books in the series, which is why you can jump in and read this story without having read the rest.

The characters were likable and of course, you are rooting for them to get together in the end. There is both romance and action in this period story. I also enjoyed Rosalind and Randel’s relationships with the children under their care. And if you couldn’t tell from the description of the book, this is Christian fiction, with a theme of redemption and forgiveness. There were some parts of the characters’ back stories that I was surprised by, but not bothered by. But of course I don’t want to give away what those were. There were also elements to the story behind the Crusades that are clearly still relevant today.

From reading some other reviews, I believe that the previous books in the series might even be better, so I look forward to reading those eventually too.

Instant Pot Recipe Ideas

Hey guys! I do several programs where I answer surveys and things like that and earn points that can be redeemed for gift cards. Recently I earned some Amazon gift codes and I already knew what I was going to use them on:

So while it doesn’t have the name “instant pot”, it seems to have about the same functionality and was cheaper, so I went for it. I also have other Bella products that I like, so I trust the brand.

I also purchased the Kindle version of this book:

So my question is, who has an instant pot and do you have any fun suggestions/ recipe ideas? I haven’t received mine yet, so I haven’t tried it at all. But I am excited to give it a try. If I find any fun new ideas, I will be sure to post them here when I get the chance.

Let me know in the comments any suggestions you might have?

Book Review- Waves of Mercy by Lynn Austin

Ok, I’m not going to lie. I was supposed to review this book a LOOOONG time ago, but I decided “better late than never.” And as I usually say, I did receive a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. The book is called Waves of Mercy by Lynn Austin.

waves

Here is the description:

Geesje de Jonge crossed the ocean at age seventeen with her parents and a small group of immigrants from the Netherlands to settle in the Michigan wilderness. Fifty years later, in 1897, she’s asked to write a memoir of her early experiences as the town celebrates its anniversary. Reluctant at first, she soon uncovers memories and emotions hidden all these years, including the story of her one true love.

At the nearby Hotel Ottawa Resort on the shore of Lake Michigan, twenty-three-year-old Anna Nicholson is trying to ease the pain of a broken engagement to a wealthy Chicago banker. But her time of introspection is disturbed after a violent storm aboard a steamship stirs up memories of a childhood nightmare. As more memories and dreams surface, Anna begins to question who she is and whether she wants to return to her wealthy life in Chicago. When she befriends a young seminary student who is working at the hotel for the summer, she finds herself asking him all the questions that have been troubling her.

Neither Geesje nor Anna, who are different in every possible way, can foresee the life-altering surprises awaiting them before the summer ends.

And from the Back Cover, which I think describes a little more:

Haunted by the unknowns of their pasts, two women search for answers along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Chicago socialite Anna Nicholson retreats to the Hotel Ottawa in Holland, Michigan, after breaking her engagement with her wealthy fiance. Filled with questions about her newfound faith and troubled by a recurring nightmare, Anna finds solace in Derk Vander Veen, a seasonal hotel worker who plans to go into the ministry.

Prompted by a request from her son, Geesje de Jonge begins to sift through memories of emigrating from the Netherlands almost fifty years ago. As she writes them down for the Semi-Centennial Anniversary of the town’s settlement, her story takes on a life of its own as she honestly and painfully recalls her regrets, doubts, hardships, and joys. Her story captivates Derk, who sees similarities between Geesje and Anna, and wishes to bring the two together.

Past and present collide as Anna and Geesje seek clarity, but neither expects the revelations that await them.

MY THOUGHTS

I very much enjoyed the storyline in this book. The characters were great and engaging as well. It seemed as if the author made a concerted effort to be as historically accurate as possible. What was interesting to me was that the book was set during two separate time periods, and yet both of those eras are in the past, making it a “double” period piece.

The narration changes from character to character and between past and present, but it was never difficult to follow along. The story was great, BUT…… oh my goodness, I didn’t think the ending was an actual ending. There needs to be a sequel. As soon as I finished it, I was scouring the internet to find out if there was on in the works, and sadly I didn’t find one. So…… good up until the end…..and I would be very pleased if I found a sequel. Please, Lynn Austin?

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved this book. I have not read any other books in the series, but I will certainly make an effort to seek them out now! I actually could see it being a movie. I even have an idea of who could play some of the characters, but I will keep that to myself for now. I thought it was great that the author makes such an effort to do her research on police procedures. I also love that I was kept guessing as to who might have done it, and I was surprised when the full story was laid out. Definitely not who I was expecting! These days, there are too many stories focusing on the police in a negative light, and I was glad to read this book that has the utmost respect for law enforcement. Carolyn Arnold is now on my list of authors to read more work from. And Madison is a great character that I will be following from now on!

Review: Valentia Pure Glow Brightening Moisturizer

Hey everyone! I have a new product for you all to check out! Its Valentia’s Pure Glow Brightening Moisturizer! I did receive a bottle for free, in exchange for my honest review. This is a great feeling moisturizer that can be used both morning and night, and can be used under makeup. It is not greasy and feels great!

cam00322
Let me tell you a little more about it!
The company recommends that you use this as a final step after cleansing, toning, and serum, but before makeup of course. Directions are simply to apply all over face, neck and decollete. What to expect: Using this moisturizer you’ll start noticing results immediately, more hydrated comfortable feeling skin and a more luminous complexion. With continued use, dark spots start to disappear, fine lines fade, and skin tone looks more even.
When you order from this company, they send you follow-up emails, including the directions mentioned above. They also have sent a couple with fun DIY beauty recipes, which I will include for you below:

Strawberry Milkshake Mask
Ingredients:
1 mashed strawberry
1 spoon of yogurt
Directions:
Mix the yogurt and mashed strawberry together. Smooth the mixture over clean skin and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water.
Why this mask works:
Strawberries and the lactic acid provide natural exfoliation that help to dissolve away dead skin cells, smooth bumps, and unclog pores. Follow up with our Fresh Mist Calming Toner to detoxify pores and balance facial pH.

Tropical Skin Glow Smoothie
Ingredients
¾ cup coconut water
1 banana
1 cup chopped pineapple (fresh or frozen)
1 cup chopped mango (fresh or frozen)
1 cup spinach, tightly packed
½ crushed ice
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a high power blender and turn it on! This recipe will make enough 1 large smoothie to have as a light meal, or two smaller smoothies for sharing. Feel free to adjust the coconut water to get the consistency of smoothie that you prefer.
They also sent me a coupon code for my next purchase! It seems like this is a very involved company, wanting to make sure their customers are satisfied. The product comes in a great glass bottle with a pump delivery system. And the moisturizer is very quick-absorbing.
They say that this product will lighten dark spots, restore skin radiance, even skin tone, diminish fine lines, and provide all-day hydration. I’m thinking of also trying it on my hands. I have some spots that aren’t very noticeable, but are annoying to me.
If you are wondering, the key ingredients are: Botanical Hyaluronic Acid, Kojic Acid, Ginseng, Safflower Oil, and Shea Butter.
This company has many other amazing products as well. Be sure to check them out at the following links:

Book Review: To Follow Her Heart by Rebecca DeMarino

To Follow Her Heart is the final installment of the Southold Chronicles series by Rebecca DeMarino. I was given the opportunity to review this historical romance. I received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

First off, let’s read the description:

Duty and love are powerful forces. Only one has the power to make her life complete.

It is 1664 and Patience Terry is devastated to learn that Captain Jeremy Horton’s ship has been shipwrecked off the coast of Barbados. There were no survivors. She had hoped that Jeremy would someday give up the sea and settle down with her in Southold, Long Island.

Unaware his memorial service is being planned, Jeremy sails aboard a British warship with secret orders to attack New Amsterdam and claim it for the British Crown. When he makes his surprise return to Southold–and to an overjoyed Patience–it’s not quite the happily-ever-after his beloved had hoped for.

With a finely tuned sense for authentic historical characters and settings, Rebecca DeMarino plunges you into a world of tall ships, daring journeys, and yearning hearts.

followheart

My Thoughts:

I have not read any other books in this series and did not know any of the characters backstories. I would say that you can read this as a standalone book, but I do believe that reading the others in order would be the preferred way to go.

I do have to be a little critical with this book, but make sure to keep reading because I have good things to say as well. Patience is a great name for the main character, because my goodness, does she have to be patient. Jeremy keeps putting the wedding off, for things that don’t seem to be like good reasons to me. “Oh, I have to go build a boat.” As if people that build boats can’t be married. If he isn’t careful that weasel Hobart is gonna horn in on him. I also feel like the part about him being on a British warship should have been drawn out longer. Since it is in the description of the book, you think that it is a big part of the story, but it really only is a couple of chapters. At least if he was stuck on a ship, longing for Patience, for a longer period of time, we could probably understand that more than him being in town but STILL not marrying her.
However, I do have to say, that despite my frustrations, I fell in love with the characters, and despite Jeremy being wishy-washy, I wanted them to get together. And I actually have downloaded the first book in the series, because I want to learn more about the characters. So there’s that! All in all, a frustrating book, but it made me want to read more of this series, which was surprising to me.

Book Review- A Sweet Misfortune by Maggie Brendan

I recently had the opportunity to review another book. This time it was A Sweet Misfortune by Maggie Brendan. This book is also a part of a series, entitled Virtues and Vices of the Old West. I haven’t read any other books in the series, but that wasn’t a problem. I’m not sure if there are any repeating characters, but if so, I didn’t feel like I was missing any information while reading.

sweetmisfortune

Here is the book’s description:

Rachel Matthews isn’t one to rely on others to take care of her. Destitute and alone, she still wants to make her own way and her own money–even if she’s forced into the life of a dance hall girl. Horrified by her circumstances, Rachel’s brother sends a friend–the widely admired cattle baron John McIntyre–to rescue her, then sets off to earn enough money to buy back the family ranch. But when months pass without her brother’s return, Rachel isn’t sure she can take one more day in John McIntyre’s home–especially once she discovers that he’s the one who holds the deed to her family’s ranch.

Sparks fly between this spunky, independent heroine and the ruggedly handsome hero as they navigate the snarled terrain of pride, greed, faith, and love in Maggie Brendan’s delightful series set in the Old West.

My Thoughts:
I definitely enjoyed this book. One of my favorite characters was Estelle, John’s grandmother. I also loved that she owned her own shop!  Rachel is definitely a spunky character that you grow to love. Even though you know she will most likely end up with John, it is also fun to read about the other men who are vying for her attention. From the beginning, you begin to see hints of John and Rachel’s affection for each other, but the author draws out the suspense before they actually get together. I don’t think it’s giving away anything to say that they end up together. Saloons, dance hall girls, “soiled doves”,the cattle ranches of Montana. What a great setting. I do need to find out if the other books in the series include the same characters. If so, I might have to check them out to follow the stories. There are also helpful author’s notes at the back of the book, describing some of the things she talks about that we in our current time frame may not quite understand. Definitely check this book out and Maggie Brendan’s other books!

This is a very popular and regular snack in Japan. Because this candy can make sounds like a whistle when you put it in your mouth and blow, it makes kids happy but their parents angry. A cute secret toy box comes with this.

CAM00296

These look like Life Savers, but when you pull them out they are a little thicker. They dissolve fairly quickly, so make sure you get your whistling in first! The idea remind of me of Toot Sweets from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Here is the toy that came with mine:

CAM00297

Pizza Potato

People around the world would say the Pizza Potato taste is good and finally this Pizza Potato add to line up in Funbox. Who think up the potato chips go well with cheese? Rich cheese on the zig-zag cut thick potato. This potato chips is only Japan.

CAM00275

Now these are definitely good. I may have to find a way to get a hold of some more. The texture of the chips are like Ruffles, with the ridges. Super tasty. Probably my favorite thing in the box.

Pretz Tomato Taste

CAM00293

The great Japanese long-established company’s technology. It was baked crunchy outside and crispy inside with special manufacture methods. We can taste the sweet tomato and green vegetables and crisp and fragrant PRETZ.

I’ve had other similar type Japanese snacks in many different flavors, but had never had tomato flavor. These sticks are a quick, easy snack and the tomato was more like a sun-dried tomato taste. They probably would be good with some dip as well!

Ume-pachi

A combination of a crackling burst Ume (plum) candy and sour Ume taste (plum) granules and it is new texture candy.

CAM00292

These are like Pop Rocks, but of course I’d never had plum flavored pop rocks before! Not bad, but not my favorite flavor.

Shuwabo

A long, soft-candy with bubbly powder on the inside. The orange flavor and the lemon flavored soft candy combined inside your mouth mysteriously creates a coke flavor.

CAM00295

How in the world does orange and lemon flavor taste like cola?? Weird! Definitely a new experience.

Book Review: A Powerful Secret

A Powerful Secret is the the story of a family, first and foremost, with some political and corporate intrigue as well. I received a copy of the book in order to facilitate this review. I found the characters likable, and while I normally wouldn’t really enjoy a political story, I would say that the majority of the book is focused on Sean and the family relationships. Of course I won’t tell you what the “powerful secret” is, but reading along as Sean comes to terms with that secret draws you closer to his character. I was unaware at first that this was the second book in a series, but I didn’t have any problem following the story without having ready the first one. I now want to read the first one, as well as the third story, which follows Sean’s younger sister Sarah. The authors include a glossary at the front of the book with common abbreviations that are found in the story, which I found helpful. Also, at the end of the book is a bonus feature, “Birth Order Secrets”. You will discover why when you read the author bio’s below. Also below I am including descriptions of each of the books in the series!

A Powerful Secret

powerful

Sean Worthington is shocked when he hears his older brother Will announce that he will not run for New York’s Senate seat. In fact, he’s angry. All of his efforts as Will’s campaign manager are now for nothing– and Sean is left to handle questions from the press while Will walks away without a backward glance. Throughout his life, Sean has felt like an outsider in his own family. And not being told about his brother’s plans is just one more piece of evidence that he’s right.

Tired of being the odd one out, Sean is determined to forge his own path. Little does he know that it’s not easy to escape your family–especially when a powerful secret from the past threatens to explode everything Sean ever believed.

Dr. Kevin Leman, the New York Times bestselling author of more than 50 books, including The Birth Order Book and Born to Win, has made thousands of house calls for Fox and Friends, The View, Today, Bill Bennett’s Morning in America, CBS’s The Early Show, The 700 Club, CNN, and Good Morning America.

Jeff Nesbit, a former senior communications official at the White House and former director of public affairs for two prominent federal science agencies, is a strategic communications advisor and the author of 20 novels. He writes At the Edge, a weekly column for U.S. News & World Report.

This book is the second in a series called the Worthington Destiny. The first book focused on older brother Will and is entitled A Perfect Ambition. Here is the description of that book:

ambition

It’s time for Will to forge his own path. But the force that drives him to greatness could also destroy him– and his family.

As the firstborn son of an old and powerful family, William Jennings Worthington VI knows what it’s like to be under pressure. Groomed from birth the relentless message that he was destined for greatness, Will has always pushed himself to succeed–nearly as much as his never-satisfied financial tycoon father pushes him. Becoming CEO of the world’s largest and most adventuresome oil company seems the next logical step on the success ladder. But when circumstances turn, Will finds himself staring down a road that leads to Capitol Hill. Can he trade the board room for the Senate floor? Or will family secrets keep him from his destiny?

And the next book in the series will focus on Sarah, the youngest Worthington sibling. Here is a description of A Primary Decision:

decision

The road to power and position is fraught with perils, even for a Worthington. But Sarah does not intend to lose.

Sarah Worthington never expected to become the US attorney general–at least not this early in her career. Plunged into the vicious vetting process, with all sides digging for secrets in her family closet, she steels herself for the path forward. Nothing will deter her from making her mark on the world in the biggest way possible–even if that means prosecuting the current president of the United States.

Yet powerful forces conspire behind the scenes to take the Worthington family down, and the president orders her to close the investigation. Will she comply? Or turn the tables to pursue her ultimate dream–the US presidency?

Book Review: Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography

I have had two periods in my life where the music of Billy Joel was front and center. First, as a small child, maybe three or four, every night when I went to bed I made my mom put a certain record on, and that record was Billy Joel’s 52nd Street. And then, as a senior in high school, our marching band show for the year was The Music of Billy Joel. So when I saw this book, I jumped at the chance to read it. First, let me give you some information on the book. Keep scrolling to the end to see my thoughts.

billyjoel

Book Description

The long-awaited, all-access biography of a music legend.

In Billy Joel, acclaimed music journalist Fred Schruers draws upon more than one hundred hours of exclusive interviews with Joel to present an unprecedented look at the life, career, and legacy of the pint-sized kid from Long Island who became a rock icon.

Exhibiting unparallelled intimate knowledge, Schruers chronicles Joel’s rise to the top of the charts, from his working-class origins in Levittown and early days spent in boxing rings and sweaty clubs to his monumental success in the seventies and eighties. He also explores Joel’s creative transformation in the nineties, his dream performance with Paul McCartney at Shea Stadium in 2008, and beyond.

Along the way, Schruers reveals the stories behind all the key events and relationships- including Joel’s high-profile marriages and legal battles- that defined his path to stardom and inspired his signature songs, such as “Piano Man,” “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” “New York State of Mind,” and “She’s Always a Woman.” Throughout, he captures the spirit of a restless artist determined to break through by sharing, in his deeply personal lyrics, the dreams and heartbreaks of suburban American life.

Comprehensive, vibrantly written, and filled with Joel’s memories and reflections- as well as those of the family, friends, and band members who have formed his inner circle, including Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray Joel, Jon Small, and Steve Cohen- this is the definitive account of a beloved rock star’s epic American journey.

About The Author

Fred Schruers enjoyed a successful high-profile career as a writer at Rolling Stone, chronicling an impressive body of musicians and actors, including Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Jack Nicholson, Sheryl Crow, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Chris Rock. His writing has also appeared in Premiere, Entertainment Weekly, Men’s Journal, GQ, the Los Angeles Times, and Columbia Journalism Review.

My Thoughts

This book is everything you want in a musician biography, covering everything from Joel’s childhood until the present. Personally, although I enjoyed his music, I didn’t know much about his personal life. I remembered him being married to Christie Brinkley, but knew nothing about his previous marriage and all the problems that occurred during that time frame. And thought Joel has achieved tremendous success, you really feel like he is a regular guy that you could hang out with when you read these interviews.

The author also includes information about certain songs, little tidbits that will make you listen to the song in a different way. Schruers also made sure to get interviews with many of the most important people in Joel’s life. This is a book that any Billy Joel fan should pick up, and would even be an interesting read to fans of music in general.

I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

Book Review and Giveaway: Spring Fling Kitty by Rachelle Ayala

Heartbreaker Connor Hart, one of the youngest fire chiefs in the country, is planning on marrying Dr. Elaine Woo, a woman who pretended to cheat on him with his best friend many years ago. She bought him a Dalmatian puppy, he gave her a ring—and the women of San Francisco are about to lose their most eligible bachelor.

Artist and poet Nadine Woo is down on her luck. The cast-off half-sister of Dr. Elaine Woo, she doesn’t measure up, according to her strict and distant father. When Nadine and her mother are about to be evicted from their apartment, she gets an interesting offer from her sister. Seems she’s in need of a little help concerning her relationship with Fire Chief Connor Hart.

As soon as Nadine meets Connor, she knows she’s in for a rough ride. Connor is the fireman who rescued her and her little gray kitten, and she’s never forgotten how safe she felt in his arms.

When Nadine takes her sister’s place at a spring fling weekend with Connor, love ignites, and there’s no going back.

Can a spunky little kitty show Connor and Nadine that doing the wrong thing is sometimes right, especially when it comes to love?

Spring Fling Kitty is Book #3 of the Have A Hart Romance Series. It can be read standalone, although characters from the previous books appear here in supporting roles.

MY THOUGHTS

I definitely thought this was a cute story. I didn’t even realize until later on that this was book 3 in a series, so I can speak to the fact that it can definitely be read standalone. The addition of the animals in the storyline was a fun touch that I found quite endearing.

I will say that there were a few bits of romantic conversation that, to me, seemed slightly unrealistic, perhaps something that something just wouldn’t say, especially after knowing someone for just a couple of days. But I am not romance hater, so I overlooked those bits and paid attention to the story underneath it.

And let me tell you, the ending was definitely not anything I was expecting! Of course I won’t tell you what happens, but let me say that I think that unexpected twist in the story was my favorite part of the book. All in all, this was a sweet story and I would not hesitate to check out more of this author’s books.
