At the same time, the father of Ivy’s long-time friend pleads with her to do what no friend would ever want. But what she learns could shatter their worlds. An international drug trafficking ring. A professional hit. And one cover-up after another.

MY THOUGHTS

Well, if you have been paying attention, you know that I  have read and reviewed all of the other books in this series so far. And guess what? I am already signed up to review the next one! The reason is because I have definitely been drawn in by the character of Ivy Nash and can’t wait to see what happens with her next, because of course there is ALWAYS something happening with her! I read this book quickly, because it was so enjoyable and I didn’t want to put it down. And FYI, you don’t have to have read any other books in the series to pick this one up, although it wouldn’t hurt.

Although the bad guy that had been tormenting Ivy in the last few books is supposed to be gone, I kept expecting him or someone associated with him to maybe make an appearance, but that didn’t happen. However, the twists and turns that are so characteristic of Mefford’s writing kept me drawn in. My only “problem” with the book was one sentence that referred to Stan “suffering a decapitated arm a couple months earlier.” So…. an arm can be amputated, but only a head can be decapitated. That only threw me off briefly though.

The next book is the final book in the series, which makes me a little sad, but I am looking forward to seeing how Mefford pulls everything together.

I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Q&A with author John W. Mefford:

Q: What do the Ivy Nash Thrillers have to do with the Redemption Thriller Series?

JWM: The Ivy Nash Thrillers comprise the second sub-series in the Redemption Thriller Series. The Alex Troutt Thrillers are the first sub-series. While I’ll eventually write a series that connects the major characters and plots from all the sub-series, you don’t have to read the AT books prior to the IN books. But I have to say, the AT thrillers are darn good.

Q: So you’re saying you don’t have to read the Alex Troutt Thrillers before the Ivy Nash Thrillers?

JWM: Nope. While a few of the characters might occasionally overlap between the series, they can be read as stand-alone. And then I’ll wrap everything up in a final set of six novels that connects all of the main characters and stories from each sub-series. If you haven’t read any of the Alex Troutt thrillers yet, you can try out the first three at a pretty nice discount. Just search for Alex Troutt Box Set.

Q: Can you give some insight into how Ivy Nash might connect to Alex Troutt down the line?

JWM: Sure…and then I’ll send over a hit squad. Seriously, I’ll be sprinkling in a few clues along the way for those who pay close attention to the details, but it will all come together in that final six novels of the Redemption Thriller Series. And it will be explosive and gut-wrenching at the same time.

Q: How many different sub-series are you planning to have in the Redemption Thriller Series?

JWM: Right now, I see four sub-series in the Redemption Thriller Series, with six novels in each. It’s the most challenging and fulfilling creative endeavor I’ve undertaken. I hope you enjoy the journey.

MY THOUGHTS

Well, since a quote from one of my previous reviews in the series is featured above, no pressure to say something amazing, right?

Once again, I love this next book in the Ivy Nash series by John Mefford. As always, the author kept me guessing. I did not even guess that a certain person was one of the “bad guys” until moments before it happened and I thought, “No way!” I am amazed at all the crazy things that Ivy has gone through. In the midst of her helping out kids, she ALWAYS finds herself in some kind of trouble. You would think she might try to live more cautiously, considering how many times she has been kidnapped, but that is just not her nature. Her past always comes back to haunt her, but she does not let that break her will and her character.

I also loved that in the this book, there is more character development for Christina and even for Stan. I’m taking a guess that there will be more action involving Christina in the next book. And oh yes, there is a next book and I will be reading it.

As always, it is not completely necessary to have read the other books in the series, but I would highly recommend it! Great job once again, Mr. Mefford!

What I Think:

So far I have read all the books in this series because they are great and I love the characters! Mefford doesn’t disappoint with In Doubt. For real, when do we get the Ivy Nash movie or TV show. As I have said before, these books are made for the screen, as the author’s writing style puts you right in the story. I’m so excited to read the next book in the series as well! And I had no clue what the outcome would be. Mefford left me guessing!

MY THOUGHTS

If you will remember, I read and reviewed the previous book in this series, In Defiance, and I am most definitely planning on reading the next one as well. As I have stated, I love the writing style of this author and I love the character of Ivy Nash. The descriptions of the deaths in the books are detailed without being completely gruesome. Of course, the manner in which they die IS gruesome, but the author is able to describe it in a way that didn’t make me want to throw the book down. And the suspense is real, you really have no idea what’s coming when you find out who the bad guy is. Some books give away too much too early, but Mefford does not. And again, I am still waiting for these stories to turn into a movie or TV show, because the writing definitely lends itself to that! Looking forward to the next chapter in the Ivy Nash story!

Book Review: When We Last Spoke By Marci Henna #WhenWeLastSpoke #FlyBy

I recently had the chance to read a great book which I loved, called When We Last Spoke by Marci Henna.

Let me tell you about it! How about the description from the back cover first?

whenwe

Humor, heartbreak and triumph are served with whipped cream and lots of local nuts in this heartwarming tale of family, friendship, and forgiveness in Fireside, Texas.

Meet Juliet Cranbourne, local radio personality and owner of a whimsical kitchen gadget store, and her sister Evangeline, a fruit tree geneticist who works for Oregon State University.

When a rift due to their orphaned past affects their sisterhood, Juliet convinces Evangeline to come home for Christmas and choose headstones to honor grandparents Walt ( a tenderhearted, good looking rancher) and Ruby ( a blue-ribbon fiddler, fabulous cook, and expert in the art of making family feel loved. As they cruise through Fireside in Ruby’s Thunderbird, Juliet hopes that healing memories will somehow smooth rough roads ahead.

Does the tremendous love that marked Walt and Ruby’s lives still have the power to renew their sisterhood and help them find their place in the world?

And here are some of the things other people are saying about this book:

“How can you not love a book, and the characters it contains, after y0u read this line: ‘Ruby had recently re-upholstered it ( an office chair) with deerskin off the buck she had shot through through the kitchen window last fall.’ In Fireside, Texas where people put mayo on their childrens’ heads to kill the lice, and mean old women still wear pillbox hats, people seem to do what my people do, but do seem a lot more fun at it.”

  • Rick Bragg, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, author of All Over but the Shoutin’, Ava’s Man, and the Prince of Frogtown

My Thoughts

This was a really great book, although I am not southern enough to fully understand some of the colloquialisms mentioned throughout the book. They weren’t too difficult to figure out though. This isn’t a fast-paced, action filled book. It is the story of a family, and as we all know, sometimes families aren’t the makings of an action film (Speaking of film, this story is currently in development for either TV or film- I saw both mentioned, so I’m not sure which).

The majority of this story is set in the past, when Juliet and Evangeline are children. I do however wish there was more information on what happened in the years between childhood and the sisters’ eventual estrangement. Perhaps that will come up in another book in the series. I sure hope so.  Also, I want to own a store like Juliet’s! I definitely look forward to more books by this author!

Also, the author is giving away a free Kindle version of the book on Amazon from February 20-24. So check that out at the link below!

My copy of the book also came with a DVD featuring a video trailer. You can also check that out on YouTube here.

Book Review- In Defiance by John W Mefford

NEW RELEASE….

Author John W. Mefford introduces Ivy Nash in the second series of the Redemption Thriller Collection.

A volatile hostage situation at a foster home reaches a bitter end: shots are fired, some die, some live to tell a sordid tale. In the midst of the anguish and confusion is one child who will bear the scars of this unbelievable turmoil.

As a special investigator for Child Protective Services, Ivy Nash lives by one rule: she’ll do anything to fight for the well-being of children. Anything. Something that was never done for her. As a “system” kid, she spent time in seventeen foster homes. Seventeen.

Very quickly, the facts of the case are blurred…accusations of sibling abuse, connections to drugs. Nothing lines up, and authorities want it all to go away. Their target? A ten-year-old boy. Unrelenting in her pursuit to find the truth, Ivy and her new friend Cristina uncover alarming new information to pinpoint who is at the root of the crime.

But evil knows no boundaries. Shock waves of her most horrific childhood memories erupt into the present, and Ivy knows that she’s in the fight for her life.

Part of the Redemption Thriller Collection which includes the Alex Troutt Thrillers and the upcoming Ivy Nash Thrillers. While all of the novels can be read as a stand-alone, there is a connecting thread in the Redemption Thriller books that will be unveiled over time. For a more fulfilling reading experience, books should be read in order: Alex Troutt, and then Ivy Nash. More series will be added into the collection within the next year.

MY THOUGHTS:

I have read one book by this author previously and enjoyed it. It was part of the Alex Troutt Series. I loved the opportunity to be able to follow this section of the series from the beginning, and I also loved having the main character be a female.

I love the way that Mefford writes, seamlessly jumping between characters and time frames with no confusion, and he is extremely descriptive of the setting . You almost feel like you are watching a movie instead of reading a book!

For those that might be sensitive, be aware that there is some violence and language in this book. It fits the story and isn’t overdone, but as I realize some people do have issues with this, I wanted to let you know.

According to the author, he will eventually wrap the story lines of the series’ together in some way, but you definitely do not have to have read any of the Troutt books to understand this book. As far as I can tell, there is no overlap…yet.

Grabbing your attention from the first page, Mefford takes you on a wild ride of suspense through the entire story. You will not want to put it down and you will be anxiously awaiting the next book.

Book Review: On The Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman

A great fully-formed story in a small package!

Hey Hey Hey! Another book review for you today! On The Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman!

ropes

First up, as always, the description:

Blow after blow, she hides her face and fights for her life.

Doctor Ruth Burnette has everything she has ever dreamed possible: the perfect job, a twin sister who is her best friend, and a fiance who is retiring from professional boxing as the middleweight champion of the world.

Then came that fateful night when she witnessed a mafia execution. When her sister is murdered she knows she’ll battle to the last round and never, ever throw in the towel. Now she’s down for the count, in witness protection, anxious, alone except for the faithful company of her German Shepherd at her side.

As the time draws near to when she has to leave her safe little corner she stays on her toes. She has to testify against one of the darkest criminals in New York, she shores up the courage to face the accused from the witness stand. Unexpectedly, he’s not the one who worries her. She wonders what coming face-to-face with his son, Victor Kovalev… her former fiance… will bring. Will Ruth have a fighting chance against the Kovalev family, or will Victor keep her pinned ON THE ROPES?

My Thoughts:

This is a quick read, as it is technically a novella. However, even though it is short, it is full of intensity, suspense, and, of course, love. As the time comes closer for Ruth to testify, it becomes a constant worry if she will make it there alive, as the Russian Mob has not given up on finding her and silencing her for good. Also in the midst of the crime and intrigue, there is a Christian backdrop of redemption. The story does contain some seedy elements, if you couldn’t guess, so I would say that this book is for adults specifically.

The story does hop around between the present and the past, but it certainly isn’t difficult to follow along, as the transitions are extremely smooth. The love story is sweet, if you can ignore the murder and other crimes. Not that you want to ignore that. Just saying that it is a cute story of how the two meet and fall in love. Especially when her pick-up line is inviting him to church. I also found it interesting when Ruth is in the witness protection program, she has to be careful to not be tagged on social media or anything like that. With the technology people have today, with facial recognition programs and the like, it is not as easy to hide out as you might think.

Despite the length, I found that the story didn’t seem rushed at all and was still an entire, well-developed story. I will have to look for more of Ms. Bridgeman’s books in the near future!

I was provided a complimentary copy this book through BookCrash, in exchange for an honest review.

Book Review: Courageous by Dina Sleiman

Well, once again, just trying to get caught up on some book reviews. I had a period of time where I agreed to review too many books at the same time, but even though it is late, I am going to keep my commitment and get the reviews out there.

So, next up is Courageous by Dina Sleiman. It is the third book in a series called Valiant Hearts. I have not read any of the other books in the series, but had no trouble following along.

courageous

The book’s description:

Inspired by the vision of the Young Lady Sapphira, Rosalind of Ipsworth joins a group of men, women, and children as a defender of the cross, seeking to free captives from prisons near Tripoli. She gladly gives herself to the cause, as she’s haunted by a tragic mistake and no longer deserves such joys of marriage and family might bring.

Sir Randel Penigree was reared to serve in the church, but dreams of protecting the innocent as a knight. Joining a crusade to escape humiliation at home, he finds himself drawn to Rosalind as they partner to train and protect a group of young adolescents. When they face political machinations, danger, and an unknown enemy bent on their destruction, they are forced to reconsider their priorities and the very nature of the God they serve.

My Thoughts:

I believe this book is geared more towards a young adult audience, that doesn’t bother me any. Even though I’m way past that age range, I can still enjoy it. From what I understand, the characters in this book were mentioned as secondary characters in the previous books in the series, which is why you can jump in and read this story without having read the rest.

The characters were likable and of course, you are rooting for them to get together in the end. There is both romance and action in this period story. I also enjoyed Rosalind and Randel’s relationships with the children under their care. And if you couldn’t tell from the description of the book, this is Christian fiction, with a theme of redemption and forgiveness. There were some parts of the characters’ back stories that I was surprised by, but not bothered by. But of course I don’t want to give away what those were. There were also elements to the story behind the Crusades that are clearly still relevant today.

From reading some other reviews, I believe that the previous books in the series might even be better, so I look forward to reading those eventually too.

Instant Pot Recipe Ideas

Hey guys! I do several programs where I answer surveys and things like that and earn points that can be redeemed for gift cards. Recently I earned some Amazon gift codes and I already knew what I was going to use them on:

So while it doesn’t have the name “instant pot”, it seems to have about the same functionality and was cheaper, so I went for it. I also have other Bella products that I like, so I trust the brand.

I also purchased the Kindle version of this book:

So my question is, who has an instant pot and do you have any fun suggestions/ recipe ideas? I haven’t received mine yet, so I haven’t tried it at all. But I am excited to give it a try. If I find any fun new ideas, I will be sure to post them here when I get the chance.

Let me know in the comments any suggestions you might have?

Book Review- Waves of Mercy by Lynn Austin

Ok, I’m not going to lie. I was supposed to review this book a LOOOONG time ago, but I decided “better late than never.” And as I usually say, I did receive a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. The book is called Waves of Mercy by Lynn Austin.

waves

Here is the description:

Geesje de Jonge crossed the ocean at age seventeen with her parents and a small group of immigrants from the Netherlands to settle in the Michigan wilderness. Fifty years later, in 1897, she’s asked to write a memoir of her early experiences as the town celebrates its anniversary. Reluctant at first, she soon uncovers memories and emotions hidden all these years, including the story of her one true love.

At the nearby Hotel Ottawa Resort on the shore of Lake Michigan, twenty-three-year-old Anna Nicholson is trying to ease the pain of a broken engagement to a wealthy Chicago banker. But her time of introspection is disturbed after a violent storm aboard a steamship stirs up memories of a childhood nightmare. As more memories and dreams surface, Anna begins to question who she is and whether she wants to return to her wealthy life in Chicago. When she befriends a young seminary student who is working at the hotel for the summer, she finds herself asking him all the questions that have been troubling her.

Neither Geesje nor Anna, who are different in every possible way, can foresee the life-altering surprises awaiting them before the summer ends.

And from the Back Cover, which I think describes a little more:

Haunted by the unknowns of their pasts, two women search for answers along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Chicago socialite Anna Nicholson retreats to the Hotel Ottawa in Holland, Michigan, after breaking her engagement with her wealthy fiance. Filled with questions about her newfound faith and troubled by a recurring nightmare, Anna finds solace in Derk Vander Veen, a seasonal hotel worker who plans to go into the ministry.

Prompted by a request from her son, Geesje de Jonge begins to sift through memories of emigrating from the Netherlands almost fifty years ago. As she writes them down for the Semi-Centennial Anniversary of the town’s settlement, her story takes on a life of its own as she honestly and painfully recalls her regrets, doubts, hardships, and joys. Her story captivates Derk, who sees similarities between Geesje and Anna, and wishes to bring the two together.

Past and present collide as Anna and Geesje seek clarity, but neither expects the revelations that await them.

MY THOUGHTS

I very much enjoyed the storyline in this book. The characters were great and engaging as well. It seemed as if the author made a concerted effort to be as historically accurate as possible. What was interesting to me was that the book was set during two separate time periods, and yet both of those eras are in the past, making it a “double” period piece.

The narration changes from character to character and between past and present, but it was never difficult to follow along. The story was great, BUT…… oh my goodness, I didn’t think the ending was an actual ending. There needs to be a sequel. As soon as I finished it, I was scouring the internet to find out if there was on in the works, and sadly I didn’t find one. So…… good up until the end…..and I would be very pleased if I found a sequel. Please, Lynn Austin?

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely loved this book. I have not read any other books in the series, but I will certainly make an effort to seek them out now! I actually could see it being a movie. I even have an idea of who could play some of the characters, but I will keep that to myself for now. I thought it was great that the author makes such an effort to do her research on police procedures. I also love that I was kept guessing as to who might have done it, and I was surprised when the full story was laid out. Definitely not who I was expecting! These days, there are too many stories focusing on the police in a negative light, and I was glad to read this book that has the utmost respect for law enforcement. Carolyn Arnold is now on my list of authors to read more work from. And Madison is a great character that I will be following from now on!

Valiant Hearts: Where Adventure and Romance Meet

Inspired by the vision of the Young Lady Sapphira, Rosalind of Ipsworth joins a group of men, women, and children as a defender of the cross, seeking to free captives from prisons near Tripoli. A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon by Greg Prato

One of the most tragic stories of the 1990’s rock world was that of singer Shannon Hoon, and his band, Blind Melon. Despite scoring one of the decade’s most enduring singles and videos, “No Rain,”and a quadruple platinum hit with their 1992 self-titled debut album (in addition to touring alongside rock’s biggest names), Hoon could not overcome a dangerous drug addiction. Only two records into a promising career, Hoon was dead from an overdose at the age of 28. ‘A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other’ is the first book to tell the group’s story—culled from over 50 exclusive interviews (including the surviving band members and those closest to the band) and featuring many never-before-seen photos. “I am honored that Greg has painstakingly accounted for what the hell happened during those crazy times. He has summed up all the chaos, jubilation, and paranoia that is Blind Melon.” -Brad Smith, Blind Melon bassist

Blog Challenge Day 6- My Hidden Talent

Well, my hidden talent… it might not be THAT hidden, but it really hasn’t been that useful to me in recent years.

I can tap dance. Yes, sir I can.

I started tap and ballet when I was 3. Here are a couple of old school pics:

I actually got some new tap shoes recently, because I have a project I am going to work on that will utilize this “hidden talent.” Hopefully I will get going on it soon. Here is a picture of one of my first tap shoes, next to my new ones:

Blog Challenge Day 5- Favorite Childhood Books

Blog Challenge Day 5 is all about my favorite childhood books.

And then a favorite of many children my age- Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Poor Alexander. Rough day.

As I grew older, I got into the Baby-sitters Club Series. And Sweet Valley High as well.
