More Duct Tape Fun- Life Hacks and Survival

We all know duct tape is handy stuff and there are so many uses. It is definitely a great idea to keep some on hand, wherever you go. You never know when you might get stuck in a precarious situation. If you have a bug-out bag, or an emergency pack, make sure to throw some in there as well.

Now, I have a book, Duct Tape 911, which gives directions on how to use the sticky stuff for medical emergencies.

Here are a few other ways you can use duct tape when you are in a sort of bind. I didn’t necessarily come up with all these ideas, but scouted them out online.

  • Tent Repair– What if you pull out your tent and discover there is a hole in it? Well just patch it up! Or maybe the zipper or pole is broken. Duct tape to the rescue.
  • First Aid– Check out that book I mentioned above for additional tips, but you can always use duct tape to make a sling, bandage strips, or wrap a sprained ankle.
  • Glasses Repair– What could be worse than breaking your glasses while stuck in the wilderness? Duct tape would definitely come in handy there.
  • Protection– Duct tape your knife to a pole and make yourself a spear!

Those are just a handful of ideas. There are tons more of course!

And check out this link for a video of some other Duct Tape Life Hacks.

Book Review: 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper #Hopelives #flyby

90 Minutes in Heaven is not a new story. It was originally published in 2004, so it may be one that people are already familiar with, as it has sold 7 million copies. However, there is a movie version being released, so the book has been re-released.

The movie is presented by Giving Films and will be in theaters everywhere September 11, 2015. The movie stars Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth, in addition to Michael W. Smith, Fred Thompson, Dwight Yoakam and Jason Kennedy. The film is rated PG-13 ( for intense accident and injury images).

This is the first film from Giving Films. They will be donating all of their profits to charities and ministries, such as Christian Alliance for orphans, Faith Bridge Foster Care, Hire Heroes USA, Hope International, LifeWater, Street Grace, and World Vision. When you see a Giving Films movie in theaters, you can visit their website and select which charities you would like to receive the profits from your ticket.

This is directly from the press release:

Pastor Don Piper died January 18, 1989 when a semi-tractor truck crushed his car.  Declared dead by the first rescue workers to arrive on the scene, Don’s body lay under a tarp for the next 90 minutes.  Don’s soul, meanwhile, was experiencing love, joy, and life like he’d never known before.  Don was in Heaven.
When another pastor’s prayers helped bring Don back to life, he became a living miracle!  Yet this is one miracle Don wished never happened.  Heaven’s bliss was replaced by excruciating pain and emotional turmoil.  With the support and prayers of his beloved Eva, their three kids, and friends near and far, Don clings to his faith in God and fights to regain a semblance of his previous life.  The Piper family’s incredible true story of perseverance and overcoming the challenges of life – and death – will bring hope and encouragement to all who see it.
This book is the “movie edition”. Now since this is the first time I have read it, I am not 100% sure what is new or different about it. Of course, there is a “personal update from Don Piper” written in 2014, that was obviously not in the original.
In his book, Piper begins with the story of his accident and quickly we get to the part we are all waiting for- his time in heaven. He tells about being greeted by those he knew that had passed on and of the wonderful, heavenly music. Now, I can be skeptical of some “near-death experiences”, especially those that give a physical description of Jesus or things like that. Thankfully, Piper’s story isn’t like that, and nothing that I read seemed all out of line with Scripture. And Piper has definitely been using his experience to point others to God.
The book also deals with the extremely difficult recovery process Piper had to go through and eventually how he accepted his situation and began sharing his story with others. My main criticism is actually in regards to the photo section and not the main body of the book.
Personally, I wish there were more  photos of Don and his family before the accident and during the recovery process. The majority of the photos are of Don sharing his story more recently.
At the end of the book, there is a chapter, Stories of Encouragement that includes letters from people who have been touched by his story. He also includes his favorite Bible verses and quotations. I’m definitely looking forward to checking out the film as well.

September is National Honey Month

Did you know that September is National Honey Month? Well it is, so in honor of that, I thought I would share with you some of amazing uses for honey. Some of these you probably already know about, but hopefully you will find out something new about the sweet stuff.

According to the National Honey Board, a tablespoon of raw honey contains 64 calories, is fat-free, cholesterol-free, and sodium-free and is composed of about 80% carbohydrates, 18 percent water, and 2 percent vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.

  1. Allergies    This one I know about personally. Some may say it’s a myth, but I believe it works. Taking a spoonful of local honey can help relieve seasonal allergy symptoms.  It also works as a cough suppressant.

           2. Dandruff

Supposedly, you can apply honey, diluted with 10 percent warm water to areas affected by dandruff. Leave it on for three hours before rinsing though!

         3. Treat Wounds and Burns

Honey is a natural antibiotic and can be used to disinfect wounds from bacteria.

  4. Lip Balm

You can make your own with beeswax and honey or maybe pick up some Burt’s Bees.

   5.  Remove Parasites     I hope I don’t ever have to test this one out, but apparently you can mix some honey, water and vinegar to get rid of parasites

6. Hangover Help  Have some honey in the morning after partying too hard. The fructose will help speed up the metabolism of the alcohol.

Of course, there are many other uses, but there are a few to get you thinking.

Are there any other uses for honey that you would like to share?

The Latest in the World of Duct Tape

Here are a few things going on out there in Duct Tape Land. Check it out!

I don’t have any pictures to post for this because I don’t want to face the wrath of NASA, but I came across this article on how astronauts make use of duct tape. Here are a few of those uses:

  • reattaching cleats to boots
  • keeping trash and food scraps from floating away(no gravity, ya know?)
  • holding items to tables/workstations
  • lunar rover fender repair

Check out the article for all the details: Astronauts/Duct Tape

I’ve Been Slacking in the Duct Tape Department

It’s been awhile since I shared new duct tape news with you so I decided to throw together some of the things I have seen lately.

First, here is a Hylian Shield made out of duct tape. I have to admit that I didn’t know what that was and had to google it, but apparently it is something from the Legend of Zelda games!

Hylian Shield

Here’s an interesting way to serve beverages at your next party. Only bad thing is that they are going to be warm. Eww.

Beer Wall

Not sure why your car would need a visor but this is kind of cute.

Check This Kid Out

I came across this article about Kids Halloween Costumes using duct tape.

You can check out the link to read more about it, but I had to share with you this photo.

I’m loving this kid’s face and pose. Haha!

A Little Science Experiment

So I just found out something that I am going to have to try soon. Apparently if you pull duct tape apart quickly in the dark, it turns blue.

This is an example of triboluminescence, which is a glow given off when certain materials are under mechanical stress or friction.

I haven’t tried this yet, but I am going to try to capture it on video.

Shiny! Firefly’s Serenity Made Completely out of Duct Tape

I admit, I didn’t even know what Firefly was until the last couple of years. Now I have watched and re-watched the sadly too short TV show and accompanying movie several times.

Just today I came across this:

Photo from JaconMakesStuff

The Serenity made totally out of duct tape! Apparently this is 23 pounds of tape,110 hours of time, and 27 rolls!

This guy also make lots of other things out of duct tape, mostly sci-fi stuff it seems.  Check out his site to see more here.

And although this isn’t completely duct-tape related, she does USE duct tape. Check out these awesome handbags made out of magazines and newspapers from Angelique Paper Products.

Recent Duct Tape News

I found a few fun snippets about duct tape on the internet that I wanted to share with you all!

First, here is a tutorial on how to use duct tape to wrap cords without making the cord sticky. This could be helpful for musicians, or even just a way to keep your extension cords, charging cables, etc. organized.

Check out these instructions!

Next up! I have never seen the show ‘Naked and Afraid’ but apparently on a recent episode, a fellow made a duct tape bra tape and underwear for this partner. I had to laugh when I saw this clip though, because the girl said that she is a modest girl and doesn’t like to have everything hanging out. Now I would think a modest girl would probably not sign up for a show called NAKED and Afraid, but maybe that’s just me.

And finally, I love when I come across duct tape artists that make amazing things from my favorite medium, duct tape! Rianna of DuctTapeDesigns focuses her work on DC and Marvel superheroes, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the like. Check out this article and then head over to the artist’s DeviantArt page to see more of her work!

I think Thor is my favorite.

Duct Tape and Lace

While not actually related to duct tape, I did like the name of this store in Troup, Texas- Duct Tape and Lace.

Owned by Robbyn Stockton and her mother Shannan Penrod, the store is a sort of antique shop/flea market with the idea that with a little “duct tape and lace”, old things can be made new again.

Check out some of their items on their facebook page: Duct Tape and Lace .

I See a New Project Coming On

I was reading this article from the Erie-Times News. The topic is decorating your dorm room using duct tape.  Some of the items they mention are frames, lanyards, tablet sleeves, and pencil cups.

But my personal favorite was the desk chair featured in this picture:

I totally want to try this so this may be my next project! I will post pictures here if I do this.

P.S. I had to answer a question in order to be able to read the entire article, but didn’t have to enter any information.

Elementary Principal Gets Duct Taped to Wall

Who knew duct tape could be used as a learning tool? A principal in Ohio challenged the students at his school to read for 40,000 minutes during Ohio Right to Read Week, with the incentive that if they reached the goal they could chose what they wanted to do to him. The students actually read 58,596 minutes and their choice was to duct tape the principal to the wall.
Principal Jim Carpenter said “You have to be able to put yourself in these situations because it’s fun for the kids. Anything that gets them excited about reading, I’ll do.”
